Our offsite backup solution allows you to rest easy with the knowledge that your vital business data is backed up and verified at multiple locations.

Leveraging open source software, we are able to bring you a cost effective solution for something that is all too often forgotten.

The backup process can be tailored to your businesses exact needs, including how regularly backups are run, the retention model for the backups, how and where the backups are stored and methods for verifying and retrieving information from the backups.

How It Works

All of your server and important workstation machines are backed up on a daily basis to a Linux based server which is in your office. This server can either be dedicated to running backups or can also be used for other purposes, such as running a file server.

The backups server will retain each daily backup for one week. On Sundays it will roll the daily backup from the previous Sunday over into a weekly backup and on the first of each month it will roll the weekly backup from the start of the previous month over into a monthly backup. The number of monthly backups retained is configurable, although common periods are 18 or 30 months.

Backups are stored on disk in a space efficient way, so if a file has not changed only one copy will be on disk and 'shortcuts' put in place for the others. This gives the benefits of having complete daily backups (stretching back to up to 30 months!) with the disk space advantages of incremental backups.

Once the daily backups have been completed, the Linux server will encrypt the contents of the backup and 'push' it across the Internet to our servers located in the Adelaide CBD. The transfer to our services is done using a highly bandwidth efficient protocol which only transfers the differences between yesterday's backup and today's. If you have 15Gb of data backed up, but only 50Mb is changing each day, then only approximately 65Mb is transferred over your Internet connection.

Requirements

To utilise the AFOYI Offsite Backup Service, you will require one Linux based server which has approximately double the amount of disk space free that you intend to back up and a broadband ADSL connection with an Internet provider who does not charge for uploaded data or at the very least implements speed shaping and not excess data charges for exceeding your monthly data allowance.

AFOYI will assist the customer in ensuring they are on an appropriate Internet service plan, but any data charges incurred by the customer from their Internet Service Provider are the ultimate responsibility of the customer.
